Yes, Sir! Sorry, Sir! My Mistake, Sir! No excuse, Sir!

Not sure if those words ring any bells in your head.....they do in mine. Not having been in a boot camp setting in over 50 years, I am not sure how the D.I.'s speak to military recruits these days but I can imagine things haven't changed a whole heck of a lot over the years. I can imagine that the recruit is still treated like some sort of maggot, a sub-human form, perhaps a worm that has crawled up out of the earth to be stepped on by authority.

It is the world's system.....it's called hierarchy.... and it permeates our entire culture, every world culture for that matter. In the military we have the Generals, the Colonels, the captains and so on down to that lowly maggot recruit. You'd best submit and when someone over you says to jump, your immediate response best be "Yes, Sir! Sorry, Sir! How High, Sir?"

In the business community, there is always a boss....never a committee....you can say you have a team....I remember being in the Record Family (the newspaper where I worked when I entered into the business world back in 1953)....you know what being in the Family meant when translated? It meant that entitled me to work 60 hours a week for my $40 instead of the 40 hours I was hired for.

Think CEO's, presidents, pick your favorite title. You will see it in Education, Sports, Non-Profits, Medical.....pick your own area....where do you function today? What is your title? We are in love with titles and letters after our name (does it matter which?.....PhD, MD, DD and on and on..... so we can be properly addressed with the proper respect for our great achievements climbing the world's model of success ladder. The only ones who aren't impressed are the maggots, the low life, the recruits, the powerless.....can I get really bad now and say the idios....those uneducated ones left out of the hierarchy....the laity?

You may have noticed that religion is right there on the top of that hierarchical list. Jesus hated it, spoke against it.......

6]"They love the place of honor at banquets and the chief seats in the synagogues, [7]and respectful greetings in the market places, and being called Rabbi by men. [8]"But do not be called Rabbi; for One is your Teacher, and you are all brothers. [9]"Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven. [10]"Do not be called leaders; for One is your Leader, that is, Christ. [11]"But the greatest among you shall be your servant. [12]"Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled; and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted. [13] "But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you shut off the kingdom of heaven from people; for you do not enter in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in. [14]["Woe to you, scribes and.........

Would you maybe say that was/is a pretty strong denunciation of hierarchy? Jesus works in plurality with the Father and The Holy Spirit. They defer to each other based on giftings and responsibilities, they are free to communicate with each other (think of the conversation in the garden), to disagree, to talk things out, to submit to one another. Supposed to be like that with us as well.

You can tell when plurality is a doctrine and not a reality.....ever been in one of those meetings where they have a doctrine of plurality.....but having discussed everything, every head turns to one person for the definitive word.....I've been there and done that myself. I've repented.

Are you married? Are you the "head" of your house? What does that really mean? That you (as the man) make all the decisions? That your wife needs to submit to you on every silly little thought that passes thru your head? I don't think so! But maybe I'll touch that smelly old bag of worms tomorrow!

I have a few more stories to tell..... mostly on myself..... that I think I'll save for next time. I'm sure this will give you enough to chew on till the 'morrow!
