I listened to my first Mumford tape way back in the beginning.... 1968... 40 years later I am in my car today listening to the latest Mumford tape...er...uh...CD.....   :)

In the beginning there was Mumford.... and he's still around....hanging in there.... all my life he has been 5 years older than me and...guess what...he's still 5 years older than me. He was one of the leading voices of the Charismatic Movement in Christianity back in the 70's.... a major player in what became known as "Shepherding and Discipleship" .... although many used that description in a very negative way.... it did restore a whole bunch of things to the church that were essential to its growth....  like biblical government, kingdom order, a kingdom theology, servant-hood, a real serious caring for God's people with everyone involved in the process, true discipleship (an attempt to build people to maturity), total participation of everyone in the congregation in evrything, no spectators and some incredible true worship....

Unfortunately we retained the hierarchy, created a new kind of them and us/clergy/laity thing that ended up running people's lives, making decisions for them, making slaves out of them, weird accountability to people over you in the Lord and an over zealous attempt to stamp out all sin from the body of Christ.... especially my own personal brand of it!

We eventually repented....Mumford eventually repented... the sad result being that the church threw out the baby with the bathwater....the good things stopped happening...the bad things seem to always hang around like clergy/laity...hierarchy.... abusing God's people and the worship went right back to entertainment.

I mentioned having the privilege of introducing Mumford to 35,000 people in Giants Stadium at that huge assembly of Charismatics in 1979. We have kept in touch over the years.... and have ended up in pretty much the same place...as most of us do who travel this long with the Lord, we eventually come to the place where we see He is in control of everything He has created and that it is all about God's incredible love for that everything He has created and called good.... and the important thing for us who know Him is to become containers of that love to the world. It is not about doctrines, labels, organizations, meetings, methods, systems and all that good stuff.

This CD had its usual impact on me.... Mumford has so much to say and no time to say it and he kind of gives you blips and pieces which have always provided me with at least 7 sermons out of every tape I ever listened to! This was no exception....I might just get 20 musings out of this one!

I love it when I hear things from other people and they agree with what I am hearing!
