On the Waterfront
I feel like it's time to get back to the fear thing again.....it's something we all need to deal with...all the time...as Satan keeps throwing it at us from all directions....talked about a lot of those directions about a week or so ago....it is major in our lives....it truly is the 2nd most powerful motivational force in the universe...
What kicked it off for me again was watching On the Waterfront again after many years..... when that came out back in 1954, I was able to get free passes to the local movie theater and watched it 10 times! I was a 19 year old wannabe actor...the next Brando.....the movie had all my favorite people together in one flick...not only Brando, but Steiger, Saint, Malden, Cobb....all directed by Elia Kazan (who haddabe the best)... :) Ok...I was young....ambitious...no knowledge of God...that was my wannabe world....
Things have changed a lot for me since then...8 Oscars no longer turns my jets....this time around I am watching a clinic on how Satan uses fear to control us.....talk about intimidation....! If Terry Malloy does what the corrupt union boss wants...like throw the fight that could have given him a shot at the title... like set up his friend Joey who is going to testify at the dock crime hearings by getting him to "meet him on the roof" where he is promptly thrown off the roof by the mob...continue to play deaf and dumb about all he knows....then he gets the perks. He can sit around all day in the loft where he can get paid extra to lay around on the sack all day reading girlie magazine....he can get treated like one of the insiders....and live happily ever after....we see threats, intimidation, beatings and dockworkers paralyzed by fear...they can't speak up or they also may end up like Joey...they can't challenge anything or they won't get work that day....they accept being treated less than human and grovel to get a days work to feed their families....when Terry decides he can no longer keep quiet you can see the horror escalate to a resounding crescendo.....I no longer see the drama or the script or the great acting or great direction..... all I can see now is the war we are in!
See the movie. See what I mean. The scripture promises us that the thing we fear will come upon us. The antidote is His calming voice that says "fear not".... to make that a reality we need to invite the one who is perfect love to come and live in us and He will cast out all fear.
Remember...it is that Perfect Love which is the most powerful force in the universe... I can live without fear because I trust the One who lives in me....He is Love.
What if.....we all could come to believe that....you know...what we believe is what we will become....ahhh...yet another posting another day....
:)
