...why we are fighting the war
"American soldiers in battle don't fight for what some President says on TV...they don't fight for mom...apple pie...the American flag.............they fight for one another" ....... General Hal Moore.
That's what all the other movies totally missed. They never got it so they never got it right! Spielberg and Hanks were seeing it in "Saving Private Ryan" .....then they really played it out in Band of Brothers......it's not about all that other sentimental or patriotic hoopla or the political nightmare that causes the war in the first place..... it's about being there for one another..... it's about the guy next to you covering your back for you....giving his life for you.
Big Bill showed up for his 85th night at the B&B....we've talked about him before....great guy...told him I had been planning to watch "We Were Soldiers" for the 5th time.... :) So he agreed to watch it with me. I kept going nutso every time I saw another illustration of the one another thing.
That statement....that the American soldier is not there fighting for all the baloney the system says they are there for...they are there fighting for one another! ...that statement....is graphically portrayed throughout the film...when the guy throws himself on a grenade to save the other guys in that area, when the Lieutenant goes back from safety to help a fallen comrade and is killed carrying him back to the American line....when two wounded guys are propped up back to back as the unit is overrun...protecting each others back...the guy who gets off the chopper to help a seriously wounded comrade into the aircraft to take his place since he is hurt worse..then a bullet pierces him as he falls on the chopper during lift off...and on and on and on. The writer/director did get it right this time around...
Especially as we watch the then Colonel Hal Moore go on to fulfill his promise to bring every man home..... either dead or alive..... because it was his men that were important....and as he told his men collectively before they left... that there would be no prejudices, no differences in race, color or creed once they hit the drop zone....those things would make no difference at all when they are on the battlefield...the only thing that would matter then...the only ones they could trust then was.... one another. Then we saw it again as Moore fulfilled his other promise to them that he would be the first one to get off the chopper in the drop zone....and the last one to leave it.
That's what true leaders do you know...they are the first ones to put their lives on the line....and they stay there until everyone else has left the battlefield. They love them...strategize for them...deploy them to experience the least casualties.. and then care for the wounded...they make every decision to protect them and bring them victorious from the battle field.
I suggest to you...that this is also why the church has continually missed it for over 2000 years. We have never seen that it is not about our great denominations, our great doctrines, our great buildings, our great leadership that is so far above all those poor laity who desperately need us to show them the way (it's called the blind leading the blind)... we send them out to fight in some theoretical concept of war that we have not experienced ourseves and have no clue as to what the war actually is or how to fight it...instead we offer sentimental bible stories about a sentimental sad looking Jesus as we present our many, many methods and systems of how to walk with Jesus, save the world and eventually get to heaven in the great by and by.
I would like to suggest to you once again...it is a very real war....with a very real enemy...we need to train some very real soldiers...train them how to fight and then show them by us being the first one off the chopper and on the field... teaching them that it is about one another....each small Band of Brothers who will cover each others back and lay down their lives for one another... because when we are in the battle together ....we desperately need to know....that the only ones the Lord has given to us is....one another.
