1874 was a long time ago....

Our friend Martha  commented on Facebook about a little book she had read that really challenged her.  This is what she said:

"Anybody heard of Henry Drummond? He wrote a little book called "the greatest thing in the world". Back in 1874. It sold 300,000 copies then. It is about 1 Corinthians 13. U can find it at Google books as a free download. Challenging "

I had remembered it... a little booklet in our bookstore back 40 years ago.  So I "googled"  Drummond ... went to his official site... and read it online... didn't take very long... hope more people go there and get "challenged"... it's that kind of booklet.  Some fun stuff too  since it was written way back then in 1874... that was a long time ago.  :)

He was talking about how everything was going to pass away.... Drummond wrote:

"One of the greatest living authorities, Sir William Thomson, said the other day, "The steam-engine is passing away."

When was the last time  you thought about a "steam engine"?   Drummond in his wildest imaginations  couldn't even begin to imagine all the things that have passed away since 1874.... how many of the things that were invented since you were a child  are still around?... many, many of them have passed away.   I'll bet you can't even remember too much about what you were doing back 1974... much less 1874?   I can't.... and some friends have said that I am older than dirt!      :)

Drummond was only 23 when he wrote this... 23 years later he was dead...passed away.... 1897... that also was a long time ago.  People today don't pass away quite as soon as they did back then.  1897 was the year my great grandfather was murdered in what is called the "Lattimer Massacre"... the coal mine owners in Pennsylvania hired 150 guns  to go along with their sheriff and opened fire on the crowd of 300/400 peaceful demonstraters  who owed their soul to the company store.  Those owners and hired guns should have read Drummond's book... maybe they wouldn't have slaughtered 19 people who dared to say maybe they should have been treated a little more like human beings.... and maybe... just maybe... I would have gotten to meet my great grandfather before he passed away..  You can google that travesty too and read all about it if you like....

Drummond's message is incredibly important.  It particularly struck me since the Lord hasn't let me write anything on my blog since the last time. ... that last time when I closed my Musing  with the same message that Drummond was trying  to get across to people...

"When will we see that this thing is not about us… or about our doing  anything for Him… ?  It is about our simply loving “the Lord our God with all our heart and mind and soul and strength… and our neighbor as ourselves…”  …then kicking back… relaxing… and enjoying the journey as we watch the Lord doing everything He wants to do…"

It's 137 years later... God is still trying to communicate to His creation the same simple message.... love Him... love others... what a bummer, huh?... that might just mean that Philip will have to pass away... so He can live.... hmmmm

Wonder what it's going to be like 137 years from now.
